5 Simple Steps to the art of self-promotion
1. Know yourself and your capabilities
2. Prepare some 'soundbytes' - always be armed with upbeat, interesting and passionate stories for when someone comes up to you and asks you
- 'So, tell me about yourself'
- 'What kind of experience do you have?'
- 'Why do you think you deserve this?'
- 'What have you been doing recently?'
3. Go back and assess what you've prepared;
- Are you just telling a lively and interesting story - or just regurgitating facts?
- Have you added humour and a little self deprecation.
- Have you instilled a little passion/excitement into what you are saying, if you're not compelled by what you have to say, how much will anyone else be?
- Promote the right stuff - there's no need to tell everyone your life history - be thoughtful about what you need to talk about and tailor that to your audience needs.
4. Pratice, practice, practice. Timing and delivery are everything. Become sensitive (by watching other good self promoters) to understand when and how to brag. Act like your best self, even when you don't feel like it - and test your new found self promoting skills at different times, with different people. You'll soon learn what works and what doesn't.
5. Go forth and conquer! Remember people want to listern to others who are excited about who they are, what they do and what they are saying.
