Ellen Discusses Recruitment Agencies
Our Consultant Ellen discusses her experience within recruitment agencies, and advises on how you could get involved!
How did you get into recruitment?
I had my first exposure to recruitment while working as an Administrator within a HR team and very quickly realised that I had a passion for people, and helping them find work was priceless to me. Soon after this, I secured my first 'official' recruitment role as a Candidate Consultant for Office Angels, a national recruitment agency. I very quickly noticed the difference between agency and internal recruitment, but it definitely confirmed for me that recruitment was where I wanted to be with my career. Since then I have progressed from Resourcer to Consultant, and now have exposure to employee relations and account management, which is an area that I had no previous experience in, but have found that I absolutely love! The buzz I get when I am able to help someone find their dream job makes each day worthwhile, and it's a pretty good career in my eyes!
What is a typical day for you?
All agencies work differently, but we always start out our day recapping yesterday's work, before planning for the day ahead. Recruitment changes by the hour in regard to what your priorities are, but if you have a base for your day it better helps you to focus. Ordinarily my day then consists of sourcing candidates to fill any positions I have on my 'desk' (this is a term used in the industry which basically means the vacancy falls under you, and you are the primary consultant in charge of filling the role). I spend my day speaking with candidates and clients, help to arrange interviews, prepare CV's, provide feedback and generally support the recruitment process from start to finish. My role ends when a candidate receives a job offer and is all set to start their new role. Although if a candidate has been offered a temporary contract, my role then expands to overseeing their contract with my client, which can include payroll queries, feedback sessions and sometimes even a disciplinary. You can never really guarantee what is going to happen on a 'typical' day as recruitment is fast-paced and ever-changing, but that's what I love so much about it. It certainly keeps you on your toes!
What is the biggest challenge in recruitment?
The exact same thing that is the biggest blessing in recruitment - the people! You spend your days speaking with incredible, talented and passionate people who are willing to go above and beyond to ensure they find work. But unfortunately that isn't always the case with the people who come through your doors. I have met a lot of people over the last few years and unfortunately not all of them have been nice. There are challenges in every job, but when your role involves spending all day every day speaking with the public, you're bound to run into some characters! I suppose another challenge is also the frustrations you can feel when things aren't going how you hoped they would. A lot can go wrong between meeting a candidate and getting that job offer on the table, but it isn't always something that is in your control. So it's easy to get very frustrated and beaten down by this job when all you want is to help your candidate find their dream job. Don't worry though - there are as many highs as there are lows!
How would you explain an agency to someone who has no previous knowledge of them?
I still find myself feeling shocked when people explain their perception of an agency to me, the things you hear are laughable! I've even been asked if my salary comes from my candidates wages! It seems that people have absolutely no idea what we do or how we work if they haven't had to use us before. I like to explain to new 'agency users' that we are an extra pair of hands in helping them secure work. We are that middle stepping stone between you and a business, so we're working on your behalf to find you the role that you want. Whether that is a permanent, temporary, contract or part-time role - we can help get you there! We have contracts in place with our clients, and they are the ones who pay for the placement of a candidate. All the candidate has to do is show up! When I tell people my job, I often get faced with the 'don't you just find people jobs?' question. PET HATE. Of course, I find people jobs. But being a consultant is so much more than that. You have to spend time understanding both a candidate, and a vacancy that you have been tasked with filling. If the two of those things matched up every time I'd be retired by now! We work on behalf of both the client and the candidate, so it is important that we match the two of you together in a way that is going to work for both of you, and be a lasting solution. We do not simply place candidates in a random role and go home thinking we've done a good days work. Often it can take months to find the right candidate for the right role. So be patient with us!
What is the best thing about working in recruitment?
It's a euphoric feeling when you play a vital part in shaping someone's life. Each candidate you secure work for has a story; whether they need to support their families, close off a debt, or just need to pay their house bills. You are a person who is able to help them do that, and provide them with that positive step in the next direction of their life. There is a huge misconception about recruiters that we're all 'commission chasers' and only want to close a sale. But if you took the time to ask 100 recruiters why they do what they do, I don't think you'd hear a single one of them answer with "money". We come to work to earn a living just like everyone else, but we are invested in our candidates and love nothing more than being able to help them find their dream role. Not to mention, I have been blessed enough to have met some of the most incredible people by doing the job I do. I attend events, conferences, seminars and training sessions- and each time I meet a new talented professional who shares their wisdom and experiences with me. The recruitment industry changes incredibly quickly, so working within that we have to change with the times. Which means every day is a new day to learn and grow! I am a better person since working in recruitment, and everything I have been taught over the years has shaped me into a strong professional individual with a wealth of experience.
Do you have any advice for someone looking to begin a career in recruitment?
If you are good with people, and have good communication skills, you can make it in recruitment. I always say that it's a roller coaster, because it is up and down daily, and you need to be able to handle that. I've certainly had my down days where I feel defeated and broken, but there has been just as many incredible days where nothing has been able to dampen my mood. It is a challenging job, and you're sometimes faced with difficult situations that require patience and understanding, so you need to be someone who won't take those situations too personally. It's easy to feel like they're aimed at you, or the work you have done, but majority rules is there is nothing you could have done differently! If you're interested in recruitment I'd suggest researching local recruitment agencies and seeing if they need an extra pair of hands! You may have to take a step back to get to a higher level, but the experience you gain in the process will be completely worth it!

As a recruitment agency, we often hear first-hand the misconceptions that people have about agencies, what we do, and how we operate. Today we wanted to clarify some of the most common rumours about recruitment agencies that are simply NOT true! We take a percentage of your salary Unfortunately, this is a very common rumour believed by people who have never had to deal with an agency before, and this is where the ‘apply directly’ outlook is encouraged, as people believe that we will take a percentage of their salary. An agencies fees are charged to the client, not the candidate. So not a penny of your wage will be taken, we promise! It costs money to join an agency It costs absolutely nothing to pop into an agency and register yourself for work. The only requirement we have is that you bring valid ID, proof of address, proof of national insurance and your bank details so that we are able to pay your wages. Other than that, you do not need to do anything to register with an agency! You can only be registered at one agency No agency will ever tell you that you cannot register with another one. Of course, we would all prefer you to only be registered with us as it gives us the opportunity to secure work for you, but you can be registered with as many agencies as you like so long as you keep them informed and updated with your work circumstances. We only have low paid and low skilled jobs available This is a personal favourite of mine having worked on the highest variation of roles in my recruitment career. We work on several industries and levels of jobs, including high-skilled, director-level positions. It all depends what our clients are looking for at that time. Recruiters only care about money We build relationships and connections with both our clients and our candidates, so we want to ensure that we are placing people in the right job for them, regardless of our commission. So, rest assured we will not just place you in a position so that we can get paid! We care much more than that!
Take a look at our current vacancies at Fusion! We are currently recruiting for all of the below roles, so give us a call if any of them are of interest to you! Fusion Resources - Introducing Talent to Opportunity.

Well done Fusion ladies - you smashed it!
Congratulations to Paul who was our competition winner today! Ellen and Kelly attended Scarborough Job Fair at The Grand Hotel on Thursday, and hosted a competition where candidates could win an entire tray of cupcakes! Fusion have teamed up with NYBEP, a business who help to shape the future of young students by providing them with an insight into life in employment, and how best to get themselves there. This morning our Consultant Ellen attended mock interview sessions at Scarborough TEC College to help prepare students for the interview process. This involved conducting interview scenarios with the students to test their ability to answer questions and sell themselves under pressure, before giving them constructive and helpful feedback so they are better able to perform in real business interviews. Today was the first of many events that Fusion will be attending alongside NYBEP, which will include further mock interviews, employment speaking, and general employment advice and support sessions for students across the area. Well done Ellen and big thanks to NYBEP for hosting a great event! Can't wait for the next one!
On Thursday evening Cher, Kelly and Ellen attended the Nestle Supplier Awards at Ascot Racecourse in London. The event was organised to show recognition to all the external businesses who supply into Nestle across the year, and to help raise further money for Macmillan Cancer Research with raffles and auctions. Fusion Resources were invited to recognise the staffing solutions we have provided across Nestle UK, primarily at the York site, and it was a great networking event for the ladies to attend and support. The evening was beautifully arranged, with cardboard ‘build-a-horses’ at every table, and even photographers dressed as jockeys! They were received drinks on arrival, along with a wonderful three-course meal. To help raise money, the event conducted a raffle and auction, all hosted by the well-known television presenter Mark Durden-Smith. As a result of this, the event itself raised a whopping £16,000, raising the total raised by Nestle in the last 2 and a half years to over £300,000! John Francome MBE, a former National Hunt Champion Jockey, also attended the event as the guest speaker, further adding to the theme of the evening and supplying the audience with some laughs and stories from his career. The ladies had loads of fun in London, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for hosting such a great night. We very much look forward to next year!
Ellen and Kelly will be attending the Scarborogh Job Fair on Thursday 14th March at The Grand Hotel! They will be there between 11:00am and 1:30pm to discuss upcoming opportunities and ways in which they can work with you this year, whether you are a client or a candidate. Pop down and say hi!

By becoming a business partner, we are as a company helping the GLAA Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority to tackle Modern Day Slavery. Last week we sent two of our colleagues to a training day in Manchester at ‘Stronger Together’ (Stronger Together - tackling modern slavery in Supply chains). This proved very useful and we wanted to share some of the information which we were given with all of you. What is Stronger Together? Stronger together is a business led, multi-stakeholder collaborative initiative whose purpose is to support organisations to tackle modern slavery within their businesses and supply chains. What is Modern Slavery? Modern Slavery is a broad term used to encompass the offences of slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour and human trafficking. The term extends to slavery-like practices such as debt bondage, sale or exploitation of children and forced or servile marriage. While varied in nature, all involve one person depriving another person in their liberty, in order to exploit them for personal or commercial gain. The term is effective in media and public use for raising attention to the level that public opinion then provides pressure for policy change, as well as effective attention to individual cases. Without using effective language, we risk inaction. What is Forced Labour? This is when one person or gang deprives another person or group of their liberty, in order to exploit them for commercial gain. What is Trafficking in Persons? This is the ACT of “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by MEANS of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the PURPOSE of exploitation. Simply put, people are tricked and deceived into travelling to a job that either never existed or if it did the terms and conditions were not stated. Notably: The victim may consent to the travel – as in cases where they are deceived by the promise of a better life, or job, or where a child is influenced to travel by an adult. Travel need not be across border but may be within country. The exploitation of the potential victim does not need to have taken place – simply that the movement of the individual was with a view to exploiting them. What is Bonded Labour? This is the most widespread form of slavery in the world. A person becomes a bonded labourer when their labour is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan – often the loan provided to cover the recruitment fee and travel to take up the role. The person is then tricked or trapped into working for very little or no pay, forced to work to repay debts their employer says they owe, and are not allowed to work for anyone else. Debts may be passed onto the next generation. UK Modern Slavery Legislation The Modern Slavery Act 2015; Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Criminal Justice and Support for Victims) Act (Northern Ireland) 2015 and Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Scotland)Bill contains the relevant legislation. Section 1(1) of the Acts define that a person commits an offence if – The person holds another person in slavery or servitude and the circumstances are such that the person knows or ought to know that the other person is held in slavery or servitude, or The person requires another person to perform forced or compulsory labour and the circumstances are such that the person knows or ought to know that the other person is being required to perform forced or compulsory labour. The punishment is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Who is at Risk of being a victim in the UK? Everyone is always at risk of being vulnerable irrespective of nationality or gender. However, whilst there are cases of vulnerable UK nationals being exploited, evidence shows that it is mainly migrant workers who are the victims of forced labour, labour trafficking and the more extreme forms of labour exploitation (A Migrant worker is a person who is to be engaged, is engaged or has been engaged in a remunerated activity in a state of which he/she is not a national). Not having the appropriate immigration (or right to work) status to work legally in the UK also puts an individual who seek paid work at risk for exploitation; however, statistics show that victims rescued from forced labour situations within the UK predominantly have the legal right to work. Why are they most likely at risk? Their lift situation may be such that they must accept any work just to eat and survive Their work options are more limited, particularly where they have limited English language skills They may expect to pay for work in the UK if it is common practice in their own country They are lured by “package deals” – transport to the UK, accommodation, and work They trust fellow countrymen who make convincing but false promises of being able to arrange regular work and good pay in the UK They are targeted by exploiters and criminal gangs who know how to spot “easy victims” who are easier to control. How the exploiters control and exploit their victims? Exploiters are well versed in the “tricks of the trade” to find, subdue, hold, break, control n maximise the economic return from the “workers” they hold in modern slavery and make it extremely difficult for victims to escape. They generally; Quickly put them in financial indebtedness so that they must work to pay off monies owed for transport, rent and food. Isolate the victims from contact with others and the local community by transporting them and restricting them to their accommodation. By using physical and threatened psychological violence, harassment, and intimidation Holding victims bank cards to take wages and controlling their accounts to go into overdraft, take out loans etc in their name. Withholding the victim’s passport and other identification documents and using their identity to commit benefit and financial fraud. Threatening to expose the worker to the authorities Threatening to hurt their families in the UK or abroad. How to Spot the Signs of Exploitation Victims? Physical Appearance – Malnourished, dirty, frightened, withdrawn, confused, injuries that may seem to be the result of an assault. Limited or no money No personal items e.g. Purse, Wallet, Jewellery Wearing the same clothes on all the time Other people present their documents and speak for them Are taken to and from work Don’t speak to anyone as they don’t know who they can trust What should you do if you think you or someone else are being exploited? We all hate interviews. They are nerve wracking and the pressure can really get to us. So we thought that we’d devise a few simple steps on how to 1. overcome those nerves and 2. demonstrate your suitability for the position.PREPARATION First and foremost, if you fail to plan you are planning to fail. Researching the company that are interviewing you will greatly benefit your circumstance and will result in you feeling a lot more calm and collected. Being prepared to answer questions, such as, ‘What do you think you can bring to …. ? ‘ and ‘What do you think is …. strongest product?’ will put you a notch above the rest. As well as researching the company, ensure to re read your CV and the job description before the interview. This will allow time to think about how your previous experience matches your future role. Always prepare answers to the most common questions, for example, your personal strengths and weaknesses, why you are the best person for the job, what you can bring to the company etc. In response have some questions for your interviewer to demonstrate your interest in the position. THE INTERVIEW Looking good feels good. Ensure you are well dressed, clean, approachable and most importantly feel confident in yourself as this will reflect in your first impression and although your appearance shouldn’t matter, it does. Greet your interviewer with a smile and firm handshake and maintain eye contact throughout the interview but glancing away approximately every three seconds – try not to think about this too much that you forget your answers! Stay calm! Speak clearly, smile and remember that your interviewers are just normal people, and they may be nervous too. If you do need a few moments’ silence to collect your thoughts ensure you do so – don’t waffle. It is not what you say, but how you say it. Leave in the same way that you arrived, regardless of whether you believe it was a success – confident and calm. FOLLOWING UP Remaining organised when job searching is important. If you have multiple interviews having a diary will help. Always ask the interviewer when they will have a decision – give it a day or two after that and call them back – remembering to schedule this in your diary. Calling your interviewer and asking for any feedback on how the interview went is not a negative. It will actually show how you wish to self improve and better yourself – you never know, this may prompt them to reconsider.
We all know that when you start a new job it can leave you feeling like the new kid at school. You are left wondering if you have made the correct decision, if your new colleagues are going to like you, are you going to know what you are doing, will you live up to the person who you may be replacing? Take a step back. Have a look around and remember that you are new and everyone has been in your shoes. Here are a few tips to settling in to your new role: 1. Review your job description and know the company Our first and most important piece of advice would be to print a copy of your job description and keep it close to hand, refer back to it when you are unsure of where you stand or what you are doing. If you have taken the time to revise your new company and it’s culture it will be easier to settle in as you will be more aware of what to expect – it may also save any embarrassment if you are asked certain questions. 2. Build respect Even if you know you are and will be an excellent employee, for the first few weeks ensure that you don’t rub people up the wrong way. The best way to ease yourself in and create good relationships is to see your new environment as a networking event. Introduce yourself professionally and politely asking questions such as ‘Tell me about what you do’, once you have began a professional relationship – there is room to show your personality. This will also allow you to get a real feel for how your new employer operates. 3. Request reviews and keep everyone in the loop The worst thing about a having new job is the not knowing if you are actually doing the job correctly. Request a performance review with your manager to reflect on the work that you have been doing. It will make you feel more comfortable about your job role and it will also show your commitment to the company. 4. Keep your head down All offices have their own politics – although it is a good idea to find a mentor who can help you throughout your new job – don’t latch on to a specific group within your first few weeks as you will be drawn in to certain situations that are not good when you are the newbie! Stay involved in your work, by all means make friends but stay focused on what you are there to do. 5. The basics Finally, the obvious rules of starting a new job – Don’t be late, dress appropriately, take notes, listen to your surroundings and ask for help if you need it!
Telephone interviews are becoming more and more common, they are a tool for the recruiter or employer to assess whether you are a serious applicant and decide whether or not to take you further through the application process. To candidates, a telephone interview can be even more daunting than a face-to-face interview so we thought we’d share a few tips to keep you calm, collected and prepared for your telephone interview. Tip 1 Always research the company, role and how to handle a telephone interview! Although the interviewer may not necessarily ask questions about what you know about the company, it will be beneficial to know these things, to slip into the interview/general conversation and really impress the employer. Tip 2 In most cases the interviewer will ask about how your previous experience is relevant to the role you are being interviewed for, therefore having your CV and the job description to hand will be a massive help. Refer back to the two documents during the telephone interview. Tip 3 As well as preparing in terms of researching the company and job description. Be sure to have some questions ready to ask your interviewer/employer. During your interview, jot down any unsure points that may occur and ask them at the end of the interview. This will impress the employer and clear any doubts in your mind about the position. Tip 4 Ensure you are somewhere quiet, without any interruptions or distractions. During the interview, any distractions may cause you to loose a trail of thought and completely throw you off the whole interview. This will also be picked up by the interviewer and they may think that you are not taking it seriously. Tip 5 Listen to every question carefully. Usually, telephone interviews involve long winded competence based questions, therefore it is vital to listen and answer as appropriately and relevant as possible. Tip 6 Be enthusiastic and SMILE. When speaking to someone on the telephone, you can gather their mood, therefore it is vital to be upbeat, happy and excited about the interview, even if you are nervous. Tip 7 Finally, treat it like a regular interview. Be professional, enthusiastic and try your hardest to impress them!

When it comes to Cv’s its difficult to fit everything on one page but with the tips below it explains how to structure an effective CV for each role you apply to! Get the basics right There is no right or wrong way to write a CV but there are some common sections you should cover. These include: personal and contact information; education and qualifications; work history and/or experience; relevant skills to the job in question; own interests, achievements, or hobbies; and some references. Presentation is key A successful CV is always carefully and clearly presented, and printed on clean, crisp white paper. The layout should always be clean and well-structured and CVs should never be crumpled or folded, so use an A4 envelope to post your applications. Always remember the CV hotspot – the upper middle area of the first page is where the recruiter's eye will naturally fall, so make sure you include your most important information there. Aim to fit your CV between 2 and 3 A4 pages A good CV is clear, concise and makes every point necessary without waffling. You don't need pages and pages of paper – you just keep things short and sweet. A CV is a reassurance to a potential employer, it's a chance to tick the right boxes. And if everything is satisfied, there's a better chance of a job interview. Also, employers receive dozens of CVs all the time so it's unlikely they'll read each one cover to cover. Most will make a judgment about a CV within sections, so stick to a maximum of two to three pages of A4 paper. Understand the job description The clues are in the job application, so read the details from start to finish. Take notes and create bullet points, highlighting everything you can satisfy and all the bits you can't. With the areas where you're lacking, fill in the blanks by adapting the skills you do have. For example, if the job in question requires someone with sales experience, there's nothing stopping you from using any retail work you've undertaken – even if it was something to help pay the bills through university. It will demonstrate the skills you do have and show how they're transferable. Tailor the CV to the role When you've established what the job entails and how you can match each requirement, create a CV specifically for that role. Remember, there is no such thing as a generic CV. Every CV you send to a potential employee should be tailored to that role. Making the most of skills Under the skills section of your CV don't forget to mention key skills that can help you to stand out from the crowd. These could include: communication skills; computer skills; team working; problem solving or even speaking a foreign language. Skills can come out of the most unlikely places, so really think about what you've done to grow your own skills, even if you take examples from being in a local sports team or joining a voluntary group – it's all relevant.
