Machinist

Job: Composite Machinist

Job Type: Full-time, permanent

Location: Near Driffield

Hours: 40hrs p/w - Mon to Fri

Salary: Up to £35,000 depending on experience

Job Purpose

The Composite Machinist is responsible for the accurate machining, trimming, finishing, and inspection of composite components used in underwater sonar products and associated assemblies. The role combines hands?on machining skills with an understanding of composite materials, tolerances, and quality standards required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Machine, trim, drill, and finish composite piezo components to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Set up and operate CNC and/or manual machines (e.g. CNC routers, mills, lathes) for composite materials.
  • Use hand tools and specialist composite tooling for trimming, bonding preparation and finishing.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD data, work instructions.
  • Carry out dimensional inspection using appropriate measuring equipment (callipers, micrometres, gauges).
  • Ensure components meet quality, dimensional, and surface finish requirements.
  • Prepare parts for secondary operations such as bonding, silvering, assembly etc.
  • Identify defects, non?conformances, or process issues and report them promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work area in line with H&S requirements.
  • Comply with COSHH, PPE, and dust extraction procedures specific to composite machining.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to machining methods, tooling, and efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, production, and quality teams to resolve manufacturing challenges.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience machining composite materials in a production or prototype environment.
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances and high quality standards.
  • Confident in using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Good manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow procedures and work instructions accurately.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Apprenticeship or vocational qualification in machining, manufacturing, composites, or a related discipline (preferred).
  • Experience using dicing and surface grinding machines.
  • Relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
  • Experience in marine, defence, or high?reliability manufacturing environments would be desirable.

SC Clearance to be obtained prior to commencement of role.

Due to the location of the business, a full UK driving license is required.
